Deepening our collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy

OpenAI and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance collaboration on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced computing to support DOE initiatives, including the Genesis Mission. This effort is part of OpenAI for Science, aiming to accelerate scientific discovery by pairing frontier AI models with real research environments and expertise. The MOU establishes a framework for information sharing and coordination, building upon existing work with DOE's national laboratories, such as deploying models and working on high-impact problems. Kevin Weil, VP of OpenAI for Science, highlighted that combining frontier AI with national lab expertise opens new avenues for faster hypothesis testing and scientific progress. The partnership focuses on exchanging technical expertise and exploring collaborations in areas like fusion energy, while ensuring future projects are clearly scoped. OpenAI's approach involves working side-by-side with researchers to integrate AI safely into scientific workflows, leveraging the national labs' sophisticated infrastructure and domain expertise.
