Indie Game Awards retracts Expedition 33 prizes due to generative AI

The Indie Game Awards has retracted its Game of the Year and Debut Game awards given to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 because developer Sandfall Interactive used generative AI in production, despite a representative initially confirming no AI was used during the nomination process. The organization maintains a strict policy that games developed using generative AI are ineligible for nomination. Although the offending assets were patched out, the use violated the regulations. Game of the Year is now being awarded to the puzzle game Blue Prince, which publisher Raw Fury confirmed used no AI. Additionally, the Indie Game Awards retracted the Indie Vanguard award from studio Gortyn Code for its game Chantey due to the developer's ties with ModRetro, a company whose founder's other venture, Anduril, produces defense drones, which the organization did not want to platform.
