Orange County radiologists use AI to detect breast cancer earlier, saving lives

Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California, is integrating artificial intelligence with human expertise to enhance the early detection of breast cancer. Radiologists are using the ICAD AI algorithm, which has shown the ability to find 20% more cancers and detect them two to three years earlier than traditional methods. For patients like Sahlee Corpus, the AI flagged a small lesion that might have been missed, leading to early diagnosis and a good prognosis. While AI flags subtle abnormalities, human expertise remains crucial; in one case, doctors correctly identified an AI-flagged spot as scar tissue rather than a tumor. The technology also helps reduce false positives and unnecessary callbacks by about 7%. The AI screening option is available at various Southern California centers for an out-of-pocket cost typically ranging from $50 to $100.
