Google is taking over your Gmail inbox with AI
Summary
Google is introducing a new AI Inbox view for Gmail that fundamentally changes how users interact with their emails by using AI to generate personalized to-do lists and summaries of relevant topics. This feature suggests actions like rescheduling appointments or paying fees, and summarizes ongoing threads, which could be highly beneficial for users who treat their inbox as a task manager. The AI Inbox is initially rolling out to trusted testers in the US on consumer accounts, with Workspace accounts excluded for now. A current limitation is the inability to mark suggested tasks as complete outside of Gmail, though Google is working on this. While the feature aims to prioritize important items, there is no limit to the number of suggested to-dos, potentially leading to new forms of overwhelm. Alongside this, all consumer Gmail users will receive free access to previously paid features like suggested replies, AI thread summaries, and the Help Me Write tool. Paid subscribers to Google One AI Pro and Ultra plans will gain access to a Grammarly-like proofread feature and AI overviews in search results. Users can opt out of these AI features, and Google confirms it does not use Gmail content to train its Gemini AI models.
