Anthropic’s new Cowork tool offers Claude Code without the code

Anthropic has introduced Cowork, a new tool integrated into the Claude Desktop app, designed to provide the capabilities of Claude Code in a more accessible format. Cowork allows users to specify a folder where Claude can read or modify files, guided by instructions given through the standard chat interface. This setup functions like a sandboxed version of Claude Code but requires significantly less technical setup, such as command-line tools or virtual environments, making it suitable for non-technical users. The tool is inspired by users already employing Claude Code for general agentic tasks beyond coding, such as managing receipts or analyzing conversations. Built on the Claude Agent SDK, Cowork executes strings of actions autonomously, which Anthropic warns carries risks like prompt injection or accidental file deletion, urging users to provide clear instructions. Cowork is currently in research preview, available to Max subscribers, with a waitlist for other plans.
