Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work

Claude
Cowork is a new feature allowing non-developers to use Claude with folder access for complex, agency-driven tasks, similar to a coworker.

Summary

Cowork is introduced as a simpler way for anyone, not just developers, to work with Claude, building on the foundation of Claude Code. It allows Claude to read, edit, or create files within a user-specified folder on their computer, enabling tasks like reorganizing downloads or drafting reports from notes. Unlike regular conversations, Cowork gives Claude more agency; it creates a plan and executes tasks steadily while keeping the user informed. Users can enhance Cowork's power by connecting it to existing external information sources and new skills for document creation. Cowork aims to simplify work by eliminating manual context provision and output formatting, allowing users to queue tasks for parallel processing, feeling more like messaging a coworker. Users maintain control by explicitly choosing which folders and connectors Claude can access, and Claude asks permission before significant actions. However, users must be aware that Claude can perform potentially destructive actions like deleting files if instructed, and there is a risk of 'prompt injections,' requiring caution, especially as agent safety is an evolving field. This is a research preview available to Claude Max subscribers on the macOS app, with plans for future improvements like cross-device sync and Windows availability.
