Musk wants up to $134B in OpenAI lawsuit, despite $700B fortune

Elon Musk is demanding between $79 billion and $134 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft, according to a report by Bloomberg. This figure was calculated by financial economist C. Paul Wazzan, who based the claim on Musk's initial $38 million seed donation in 2015, factoring in his technical and business contributions. Wazzan's analysis suggests wrongful gains of $65.5 billion to $109.4 billion for OpenAI and $13.3 billion to $25.1 billion for Microsoft. Despite Musk's personal fortune being around $700 billion, his legal team argues he deserves returns "many orders of magnitude greater" than his investment. The massive scale of the demand suggests the legal battle is not primarily about money, leading OpenAI to characterize the suit as "ongoing pattern of harassment" featuring "deliberately outlandish, attention-grabbing claims" ahead of the April trial in Oakland, California.
