Comic-Con Bans AI Art After Artist Pushback
Summary
San Diego Comic-Con quietly reversed its AI-friendly policy for its art show after facing a swift, artist-led backlash. Previously, artists could display AI-generated material if it was not for sale, clearly marked as AI-produced, and credited the style's original artist. However, growing anti-AI sentiment among the creative community led to immediate policy change. Comic and concept artist Tiana Oreglia first noticed the policy and alerted others, while prominent artist Karla Ortiz used her large social media following to publicly condemn the decision, calling it a disgrace that normalized exploitative technology. Ortiz noted that generative AI is already impacting artists' livelihoods by shortening project durations and replacing initial ideation work in major studios. The artists view Comic-Con, an institution built on creative work, as a sacred space that should not platform technology trained on their uncompensated work. An organizer reportedly indicated the previous rules were intended to curtail submissions, but loud artist protest pressured the office into a complete ban. While artists are relieved, they remain vigilant, noting that AI art still appears at other conventions, sometimes resulting in vendors being banned.
