Latest ChatGPT model uses Elon Musk’s Grokipedia as source, tests reveal

Tests conducted by The Guardian revealed that the latest ChatGPT model, GPT-5.2, has started citing Elon Musk's AI-generated encyclopedia, Grokipedia, as a source for various queries, including those about Iranian conglomerates and historical figures like Sir Richard Evans. Grokipedia, which competes with Wikipedia but lacks direct human editing, has been criticized for promoting right-wing narratives. While ChatGPT avoided citing Grokipedia for widely known misinformation topics, it incorporated its information on more obscure subjects, sometimes presenting claims stronger than those found on Wikipedia. Disinformation researchers are concerned that this filtering of information from potentially untrustworthy sources like Grokipedia could subtly influence LLM responses and inadvertently boost the credibility of these sources in the eyes of users. OpenAI stated its web search draws from a broad range of sources and employs safety filters, while Anthropic's Claude has also reportedly referenced Grokipedia.
