Apple’s Xcode adds OpenAI and Anthropic’s coding agents

Apple is integrating AI-powered coding agents from OpenAI and Anthropic directly into Xcode, the software used for developing apps across Apple platforms. The new Xcode 26.3 update will allow developers to utilize Anthropic’s Claude Agent and OpenAI’s Codex to perform actions such as writing and editing code, updating project settings, and searching documentation. While previous versions offered coding assistance from Claude and ChatGPT, this update enables these AI agents to take direct action within the application. Furthermore, Apple is making Xcode available via the Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard that permits developers to integrate other AI tools. This announcement follows OpenAI's recent launch of its AI-powered Codex app for Mac. Xcode 26.3 is rolling out to members of the Apple Developer Program immediately, with a public App Store release expected soon.
