Goldman Sachs taps Anthropic’s Claude to automate accounting, compliance roles

Goldman Sachs is collaborating with AI startup Anthropic to develop autonomous agents powered by Claude to automate roles in accounting for trades and client onboarding. Marco Argenti, Goldman's CIO, stated the firm is in the early stages but expects to launch these agents soon, viewing them as "digital co-workers" for complex, process-intensive tasks. While Goldman CEO David Solomon previously announced a multiyear reorganization around generative AI aimed at constraining headcount growth, Argenti noted it is premature to expect job losses in the affected compliance and accounting functions, emphasizing the current goal is injecting capacity to speed up processes and improve client experience. The bank was surprised by Claude's capability beyond coding, particularly in areas requiring data parsing and rule application, and may next apply this technology to tasks like creating investment banking pitchbooks.
