T-Mobile will live translate regular phone calls without an app

T-Mobile is set to test a new AI feature called Live Translation this spring, which will translate regular phone calls in real-time across more than 50 languages. The service is enabled directly at the network level, meaning users do not need to download specific apps or use special devices, though the translation must be initiated by a T-Mobile customer. The feature requires a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) connection, allowing it to work reliably over 4G LTE and 5G networks. Beta participants can activate the service by dialing 87 or later this spring by using the command "Hey T-Mobile." T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan stated the goal is to overcome communication barriers, while President John Saw confirmed that call recordings or transcripts will not be saved, as the service is designed only for real-time translation.
