Anthropic says it’ll try to keep its data centers from raising electricity costs

Facing growing backlash over energy-intensive data centers, Anthropic has pledged to limit the impact on local electricity bills. The company announced it will pay for 100 percent of the upgrades needed to connect its data centers to power grids, including the shares of costs that would typically be passed on to consumers. This commitment follows similar moves by companies like Microsoft and Meta amid rising electricity rates becoming a major political issue and causing local opposition to new data center construction. Anthropic also stated it will support efforts to bring new power sources online and is willing to reduce its power consumption during peak demand times to help relieve grid pressure during extreme weather events.
