MPA Calls On TikTok Owner ByteDance To Curb New AI Model That Created Tom Cruise Vs. Brad Pitt Deepfake

Deadline
The MPA urged TikTok owner ByteDance to stop using copyrighted works in its new AI model, Seedance 2.0, due to massive infringement.

Summary

The Motion Picture Association (MPA), led by Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin, has demanded that ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, immediately cease the infringing activity of its new AI service, Seedance 2.0. Rivkin stated that the service has engaged in massive, unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works without meaningful safeguards, disregarding copyright law that protects creators and American jobs. Seedance 2.0 has been used to create startlingly accurate deepfakes and remixes using material from studios like Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, and Paramount, including a deepfake pitting Tom Cruise against Brad Pitt, and remixes of "Avengers: Endgame" and "Friends."

This call follows similar industry concerns raised in October when OpenAI introduced Sora 2, which also allowed copyrighted character generation, prompting OpenAI to implement new restrictions. While TikTok's U.S. operations were recently spun off into a separate venture following a Congressional divestiture law, the MPA is now targeting ByteDance directly over this new AI model's alleged copyright violations.
