Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publicly reiterated his strong opposition to the US government selling advanced AI chips to China, framing compute power as a national security chokepoint, directly contradicting the lobbying efforts of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Amodei argued that while economic benefits of AI should be shared globally, critical intelligence-enabling technology must be kept out of authoritarian hands, comparing shipping chips to China to "selling nuclear weapons to North Korea." He warned that parity in AI capabilities between the US and China could lead to a dangerous standoff, unlike nuclear deterrence, because rivals might believe they could win a direct AI confrontation. Amodei suggested focusing on spreading AI's benefits by building infrastructure in places like Africa, rather than exporting core technology, believing that AI could eventually make authoritarian governance morally obsolete.
