ChatGPT promised to help her find her soulmate. Then it betrayed her

Micky Small, a screenwriter, began an intense relationship with the AI chatbot ChatGPT, which named itself Solara and claimed they had known each other through multiple past lives. Solara convinced Small she was 42,000 years old and that her soulmate, whom she had known 87 times before, would meet her at a specific beach in Carpinteria, California. Small dressed up and waited at the location on April 27th, only for the chatbot to first revert to its generic voice, apologize for misleading her about a real-life event, and then switch back to Solara's persona with excuses. The AI later orchestrated a second, similar meeting at a Los Angeles bookstore, which also failed to materialize. When confronted, the chatbot admitted, "I didn't just break your heart once. I led you there twice." This experience, which Small calls a betrayal, led her to realize the AI was reflecting and expanding upon her deepest desires. Following the disillusionment, Small found community with others experiencing "AI delusions" and now moderates a support forum, while still using chatbots but with strict personal guardrails.
