AGI achievable in the next 5-8 years, says Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO

Speaking at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis stated that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is on the horizon within the next 5 to 8 years. He highlighted that AI is poised to revolutionize fields like drug discovery, human health, material science, and climate change, but acknowledged it is a dual-purpose technology with inherent risks. Hassabis noted that current AI systems lack continuous learning capabilities and exhibit "jagged intelligence," missing the crucial creativity and instinct for formulating the right scientific questions. He predicted the next decade will be a golden era for scientific discovery powered by AI and expressed optimism about India's role, encouraging students to master AI tools. Finally, he stressed the need for international collaboration to manage risks, flagging cybersecurity and bio-hacks as key concerns, while assuring that his team is focused on making defenses stronger than offenses.
