6,000 execs struggle to find the AI productivity boom
Summary
A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) surveying almost 6,000 executives in the US, UK, Germany, and Australia found that over 80 percent currently see no discernible effect of AI on employment or productivity, with 89 percent reporting no change in sales volume per employee over the past three years. Despite this lack of current impact, 75 percent of businesses expect to use AI within three years, and executives anticipate reduced employment and a 1.4 percent productivity increase by 2028. This finding aligns with other research from PwC and Deloitte, which also indicate that commercial benefits of AI adoption are not yet meeting expectations. Furthermore, a trial of Microsoft's M365 Copilot showed no productivity gain, leading Microsoft executives to admit difficulty in demonstrating a clear return on investment for the tool.
