OpenAI’s first ChatGPT gadget could be a smart speaker with a camera

OpenAI's inaugural hardware release is expected to be a smart speaker equipped with a camera and a Face ID-like facial recognition system, potentially priced between $200 and $300. This device will reportedly be capable of recognizing nearby objects and conversations. The development follows OpenAI's acquisition of Jony Ive’s hardware company last May for nearly $6.5 billion. While details are emerging, the first device is not expected before March 2027, and it will not be a wearable. In addition to the speaker, OpenAI is also "possibly" developing smart glasses and a smart lamp, though the timeline for the glasses is later (potentially 2028) and the status of the lamp is unclear, indicating these plans are in early stages.
