OpenAI will reportedly release an AI-powered smart speaker in 2027

OpenAI is reportedly developing several AI-powered hardware devices, including smart glasses, a smart lamp, and a smart speaker, with a dedicated team of over 200 employees working on the project. The first product expected is the smart speaker, anticipated to launch in early 2027 for $200 to $300. This speaker will reportedly include a camera capable of identifying objects and conversations nearby, and a facial recognition feature for purchase authentication, similar to Face ID. OpenAI acquired Jony Ive's design startup io Products last year, positioning Ive to lead hardware development. However, the project faces potential delays due to technical, privacy, and logistical challenges, and consumer reluctance regarding always-on listening and viewing devices.
