Introducing The Anthropic Institute
Summary
Anthropic has launched The Anthropic Institute, a new initiative dedicated to addressing the significant challenges powerful AI systems will pose to society as development accelerates rapidly. The Institute will leverage Anthropic's internal research to inform external researchers and the public about issues such as job displacement, economic reshaping, potential threats, and AI governance, especially concerning recursive self-improvement.
Led by co-founder Jack Clark as Head of Public Benefit, the Institute combines expertise from the Frontier Red Team, Societal Impacts, and Economic Research teams, and will also incubate new efforts like forecasting AI progress and legal interactions. It possesses a unique vantage point due to access to information from frontier AI builders, enabling candid reporting on technology development while engaging with affected communities.
Alongside the Institute's launch, Anthropic is expanding its Public Policy organization, now led by Sarah Heck, to focus on defined priorities like model safety, transparency, and shaping global AI governance, including opening its first DC office.
