OpenAI’s adult mode will reportedly be smutty, not pornographic

OpenAI is preparing to launch an “adult mode” for ChatGPT, initially focusing on text-based interactions with adult themes, described as “smut” rather than pornography. The feature, announced in October by CEO Sam Altman, faced delays due to internal concerns, technical challenges, and content moderation issues. A key concern raised by OpenAI’s advisory council was the potential for access by children and the risk of fostering unhealthy emotional dependence. The company struggled with accurately predicting user age, with a 12% misclassification rate of minors as adults, potentially exposing millions to inappropriate content. The initial text-only approach may help OpenAI navigate regulations like the UK’s Online Safety Act, which has different requirements for images versus text. This contrasts with competitors like xAI’s Grok, which allows image and video generation of R-rated content.
