ChatGPT’s ‘Trusted Contact’ will alert loved ones of safety concerns

OpenAI is introducing an optional safety feature for ChatGPT called 'Trusted Contact' for adult users. This feature allows users to designate a trusted individual, such as a friend or family member, who will be notified if OpenAI's systems detect conversations related to self-harm or suicide. The goal is to provide an additional layer of support, complementing existing helplines. The feature is opt-in, requiring both the user and the designated contact to agree. Importantly, chat transcripts will not be shared; instead, if serious safety concerns are identified, a trained team will review the situation, and a brief notification will be sent to the Trusted Contact. This initiative follows a previous emergency contact feature introduced after a tragic incident and aligns with similar safety measures implemented by other platforms like Meta.
