Apple’s AirPods with cameras for AI are apparently close to production

Apple's rumored AirPods equipped with cameras for AI functionalities are reportedly close to entering early mass production testing, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Prototypes are currently being actively used by Apple testers in the design validation test stage, a step preceding production validation. These cameras are not intended for taking photos or videos but will capture low-resolution visual information to assist Siri with queries, such as identifying ingredients for cooking suggestions or aiding with navigation. The new AirPods are expected to resemble the AirPods Pro 3 but will feature longer stems to accommodate the camera technology. A small LED light will indicate when visual data is being transmitted to the cloud. While an initial launch in the first half of 2026 was considered, delays in its upgraded Siri have potentially pushed the release. The improved Siri is slated for a September release, suggesting the new AirPods might launch around the same time, similar to the AirPods Pro 3's September 2025 announcement. This move positions Apple to compete with companies like Meta in the AI-infused gadget market, with Apple also reportedly developing smart glasses and an AI pendant.
