At the Build 2026 conference, Microsoft introduced MAI-Thinking-1, a medium-sized, flagship reasoning model trained from scratch on clean data without third-party distillation. This launch signals Microsoft's continued shift toward developing its own internal AI infrastructure, moving beyond its previous reliance on OpenAI models.
In addition to the reasoning model, Microsoft announced several other specialized AI tools: MAI-Image 2.5 for image generation, MAI-Transcribe-1.5 for faster speech-to-text, MAI-Voice-2 for expanded language support, and MAI-Code-1, an inference-efficient model integrated into GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code.
