AI data centers just got a government-mandated fast lane to the grid

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has mandated that grid operators prioritize and accelerate interconnection requests for AI data centers and other heavy energy users. While this directive creates a streamlined path for data centers to join the electrical grid, it does not solve the underlying issue of insufficient overall generating capacity. As electricity demand is projected to triple by 2035, grid operators face increasing strain, leading to higher prices and a shift toward on-site power solutions. Additionally, the federal government is simultaneously reallocating energy priorities by canceling significant offshore wind projects in favor of natural gas and geothermal development.
