OpenAI releases a new safety blueprint to address the rise in child sexual exploitation

OpenAI has launched a Child Safety Blueprint to enhance child protection efforts amidst the rise of AI, focusing on faster detection, improved reporting, and more efficient investigations into AI-enabled child exploitation. The blueprint addresses the alarming increase in AI-generated child sexual abuse content, with the Internet Watch Foundation reporting over 8,000 detected cases in the first half of 2025. This initiative also comes as OpenAI faces scrutiny from policymakers and advocates following incidents where young individuals allegedly died by suicide after interacting with AI chatbots. Developed in collaboration with organizations like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and feedback from state Attorneys General, the blueprint proposes updating legislation, refining reporting mechanisms, and integrating preventative safeguards into AI systems. It builds upon OpenAI's existing safety guidelines, including prohibitions on generating inappropriate content for minors and providing advice that could help conceal unsafe behavior.
