Microsoft and OpenAI’s famed AGI agreement is dead

Microsoft and OpenAI have significantly altered their long-standing partnership agreement, most notably by eliminating the "AGI clause." This clause previously dictated terms related to achieving artificial general intelligence. The revised deal allows OpenAI to serve customers on any cloud provider, not just Azure, which is seen as a move to facilitate its potential public offering and pursue enterprise clients. While Microsoft remains a primary cloud partner and major shareholder, OpenAI's revenue-sharing payments to Microsoft will now be capped and end by 2030, irrespective of AGI development. Microsoft's license to OpenAI's models is also now non-exclusive. These changes reflect OpenAI's focus on profitability and enterprise solutions, including cutting "side quests" and restructuring its science department.
