Google and Pentagon reportedly agree deal for ‘any lawful’ use of AI

Google has reportedly entered into a classified agreement with the US Department of Defense, permitting the Pentagon to utilize its AI models for “any lawful government purpose.” This development follows internal pressure from Google employees concerned about the potential for inhumane or harmful applications of the technology. While the reported terms include provisions against domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons without human oversight, the contract also stipulates that Google cannot veto government operational decisions, raising questions about the enforceability of these restrictions. The deal places Google among other major AI firms, including OpenAI and xAI, that have established similar partnerships with the US government.
