Google reports that cybercriminals and state-sponsored groups from China and North Korea are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance their offensive capabilities. Notably, researchers identified the first instance of AI being used to create a zero-day exploit, a potent tool that targets previously unknown software vulnerabilities. The malicious code displayed distinct AI characteristics, including textbook Python syntax and hallucinations. Furthermore, threat actors are utilizing AI chatbots to research vulnerabilities and evolve their attack strategies, significantly lowering the barrier for entry for less skilled hackers.
