Data centers could account for up to 9% of Texas water use by 2040, UT Austin report finds

A report from the University of Texas at Austin indicates that the rapid expansion of data centers, driven by artificial intelligence and cloud computing, may increase their share of Texas water consumption from less than 1% today to as much as 9% by 2040. This growth poses significant challenges for a state already facing severe water shortages, population increases, and massive infrastructure needs. Researchers emphasize that while uncertainties exist regarding specific cooling technologies, industry stakeholders must prioritize transparency, improved coordination, and the adoption of alternative water sources like reclaimed wastewater to mitigate the environmental impact.
