AI’s memory crunch is coming for Android apps

Google has announced new app quality requirements for Android developers as the mobile industry faces a memory chip shortage driven by the AI data‑center boom. The changes set performance thresholds for dynamic memory usage, bitmap handling, and code optimization to prevent slowdowns and crashes. Starting this week, developers will receive alerts when their apps exceed the new limits, and additional diagnostic tools—including a Memory Limiter feature—will be rolled out later in the year. All Play Store apps must also meet a Zero Tap Sign‑In standard by April 2027, and the memory thresholds must be satisfied by February 2027.
