Google says its AI weather model is getting better

Google has launched WeatherNext 3, an updated AI weather model that incorporates real-time satellite observations to generate hourly forecasts with 5-kilometer resolution—five times sharper than its predecessor. This allows for significantly more accurate precipitation predictions, especially for fast-moving systems and regions lacking ground-based radar. The model also forecasts renewable energy metrics like wind speed at turbine height. WeatherNext 3 is now integrated across Google Search, Maps, and Gemini, and is being used by agencies like the US National Hurricane Center. While AI models are advancing rapidly, Google emphasizes they complement rather than replace traditional physics-based simulations.
