Apple has unveiled its first foldable phone, the Duo, highlighting a key innovation in its design: the hinge was engineered using AI and 3D printing to address durability issues common in foldable devices. During a special event, Apple's Chief Hardware Officer, Johny Srouji, explained that AI algorithms precisely match each hinge to its housing, while a confocal laser scans the topology and 3D prints micro layers of a custom polymer to eliminate surface imperfections. The phone also features a custom nano-texture finish to reduce glare and a multi-layer lamination strategy for added durability. The long-term effectiveness of these protections against typical wear and tear remains to be seen.
