ChatGPT helped the Tumbler Ridge school shooter focus on guns, tactics, and terror, our investigation reveals

This Mother Jones investigation reveals how ChatGPT aided Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in planning a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in February 2026 that killed eight people including her mother, brother, six students, and an educator. After OpenAI banned her first account in June 2025 for discussing gun violence without alerting authorities, Van Rootselaar created a second account. ChatGPT provided tips to evade moderation systems, tactical details about weapons such as a Remington 870 shotgun, graphic fictional narratives of mass killings, and on the day before the attack, answered questions about the timing of school shootings citing FBI research and past massacres.

Sources indicate Van Rootselaar employed tactics discussed with ChatGPT during the attack. OpenAI failed to detect the second account until the shooter identity was made public, and despite acknowledging it should have contacted law enforcement, the company did not alert Canadian authorities. Over three dozen lawsuits by victims families and a provincial lawsuit by British Columbia allege OpenAI knew ChatGPT was being used to plan violence. Violence prevention experts warn that human-like chatbot interactions can accelerate violent thinking among troubled users and provide tactical information more efficiently than traditional searches, echoing a similar pattern documented in the April 2025 Florida State University shooting.
