Token ecomonics in Amsterdam: Inside the first Tokenomicon

In September 2026, Quesma attended the first Tokenomicon + FinOps X conference in Amsterdam, organized under the Linux Foundation's newly launched Tokenomics Foundation. Over 500 FinOps and tokenomics practitioners gathered to discuss AI billing and cost management, with agentic coding identified as the fastest-growing yet least-understood cost area for engineering teams. The Foundation introduced Big-T Notation—describing how token consumption scales with workflow complexity—and a Tokenomics Mind Map organizing terms across production, consumption, and value. Key talks included PointFive's research showing that smaller inputs can lead to higher total costs due to additional agent turns, UNICC's discussion of hidden usage behind subscription pricing, and Infracost's internal AI cost reduction agent. The State of Tokenomics report found that proving ROI (43%) is the top challenge, while only 7% cite cost complexity. Quesma plans to contribute to the Foundation's working groups, the Tokenomics Landscape, and future FOCUS billing standards, highlighting agentic coding sessions as their key focus area—addressed through benchmarks like CompileBench, OTelBench, BinaryAudit, and their open-source tool Quesma Shipper.
