Android is using AI to suss out scammers in Google Messages

Google is rolling out AI-powered scam detection and enhanced security features across Android devices.

Summary

Google is introducing new scam defense features on Android to help users avoid mobile fraud, including an enhanced protection setting in Google Messages that uses cloud-based Gemini AI models to analyze conversations with unknown senders for scam intentions. This opt-in feature encrypts user data and is processed in a secure space inaccessible to Google. It also employs on-device Gemini Nano AI to inspect real-time web signals from unfamiliar URLs for malicious content before they are opened. Additional security measures include blocking apps from enabling call forwarding without user notification and automatically hiding sensitive information during screen sharing in Chrome and Android WebView. The scam detection for chat notifications, previously on Pixel phones, will expand to devices from Honor, Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, Xiaomi, and others, reaching hundreds of millions more users later this year.
