Meta launches an open-weight AI model that runs on Macs
Summary
Meta has launched Muse Spark Open, which it describes as the "most capable" open-weight AI model in the United States. The model, announced on October 15, 2026, features 816 billion parameters and a 1 million token context window, and Meta claims it outperforms other popular open-weight models based on its evaluation results.
Muse Spark Open is natively multimodal and built for complex coding and agentic tasks. It is designed to run locally on Apple computers, but requires at least 1 terabyte of RAM and works best on a Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip. Meta paired the model with Muse Code, its AI coding terminal, and deployed it in workflows such as bug fixes and new features for a Mastodon client, as well as reviewing and cropping footage in DaVinci Resolve.
Open-weight models offer advantages over closed models, including greater cost efficiency, transparency, and flexibility. Meta is making Muse Spark Open available through several API platforms.
