Spotify pulled 50 million AI slop and spam tracks from its recommendations
Summary
Spotify announced that it has removed more than 50 million songs considered AI-generated slop or spam from user recommendations over the past year. The company has also adjusted its recommendation system to prioritize music made by human artists. Spotify states that its editors apply the same standards and do not program content identified as slop or spam. While Spotify has not mandated labels on all AI tracks, it introduced an "AI Persona" badge for artists using an AI identity that does not represent a real person, and it will not recommend music from AI personas. Other platforms like YouTube Music, Deezer, and Bandcamp have taken different approaches to AI music. Spotify uses listener engagement, feedback, upload patterns, metadata, and third-party AI detection tools to identify AI slop, and last year it removed over 75 million spam tracks. It is also partnering with Universal Music Group and Believe to launch a tool for creating AI music remixes.
