Anthropic's cloud partnerships are getting messy
Summary
According to a leaked S-1 filing reported by The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic is struggling to secure sufficient cloud capacity from AWS, Google, and Microsoft, which increasingly regard the Claude-maker as a competitor rather than a customer. The filing adds detail to earlier reports from Reuters and the Financial Times, indicating Anthropic believes it could spend over $750 billion on cloud contracts, some still under negotiation. Despite this massive spending, it is not enough, so Anthropic is leasing its own data centers and working with third-party operators, though it worries these operators have a "limited operating history" and may be less reliable than hyperscalers. The enormous spend follows an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of the year, with $16.3 billion in revenue during the same period, and just two customers accounting for about a fifth of sales. The filing also warns of catastrophic risk disclosures, including potential liability for damages from harmful AI behavior exceeding insurance coverage. Last week, Anthropic told investors that third-quarter revenue alone reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from the previous quarter, and it is reportedly targeting a November IPO.
