OpenAI acquires Orchestra Bio, folds drug-development agents into Rosalind

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, integrating its AI drug-development agents into the Rosalind life sciences suite and Rosalind Workbench.

Summary

OpenAI acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old startup building AI agents for pharmaceutical drug development, absorbing its team and technology into the Rosalind life sciences suite and the related Rosalind Workbench tool. Orchestra Bio had reportedly raised around $20 million as of 2025 from backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC. The deal, announced on October 20, 2026, did not include disclosed financial terms. OpenAI says Moderna and Novo Nordisk are already customers for Rosalind. Orchestra Bio developed an agentic operating layer that spans multiple stages of drug development, coordinating work across phases with AI agents handling tasks alongside human scientists, allowing scientists to delegate monitoring studies, tracking timelines, and identifying delays, while keeping decision-making with humans. OpenAI introduced its specialized GPT-Rosalind model in April to help researchers tackle complex problems in biology, chemistry, and drug discovery, and Rosalind Workbench helps researchers plan experiments and analyze results. The combined system is intended to shrink drug development timelines. Rival Anthropic acquired AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio for roughly $400 million in April. The acquisition targets operational workflow rather than discovery-stage science, positioning OpenAI's life sciences effort around the coordination bottleneck in drug development. Orchestra Bio should not be confused with Orchestra BioMed Holdings, a separate Nasdaq-listed medical-device company trading under the ticker OBIO.
