Defense secretary Pete Hegseth designates Anthropic a supply chain risk

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated AI company Anthropic as a "supply-chain risk," following President Donald Trump's announcement banning Anthropic products from the federal government. This action came after a week of tense negotiations where the Pentagon demanded Anthropic agree to allow the use of its model, Claude, for "all legal purposes," including autonomous lethal weapons without human oversight and mass surveillance. The supply-chain risk designation, usually reserved for companies with foreign government ties, bars any entity using Anthropic products from working with the Department of Defense. Hegseth stated the Department of Defense requires "full, unrestricted access" to Anthropic's models for lawful defense purposes, accusing the company and its CEO, Dario Amodei, of "duplicity" and prioritizing ideology over American lives.
