Character.AI’s new Books mode turns reading into roleplay

Character.AI has introduced a new feature called Books, which enables users to engage with over 20 classic public domain titles from Project Gutenberg. This initiative aims to offer a more structured roleplaying alternative to the company's open-ended chatbot features. Users can participate in the narrative either as established characters or their own custom personas.

The feature provides various ways to interact with stories, including a "book arc mode" that follows original plot points, an "off-script mode" for freer interaction, and upcoming guided "TapTale" prompts. Additionally, users can create and share "alternative universe remixes," such as reimagining classic stories in entirely different genres. Available on the mobile app and Labs hub, the feature offers limited free turns for users as the company continues to navigate controversies regarding safety and teen interaction.
