California to begin ticketing driverless cars that violate traffic laws
Summary
Starting July 1, the California Department of Motor Vehicles will implement new regulations enabling law enforcement to issue notices of noncompliance to autonomous vehicle (AV) manufacturers for moving violations. These rules were developed following recurring issues with robotaxis obstructing emergency responders and ignoring traffic signals, such as an incident where a Waymo vehicle performed an illegal U-turn. In addition to ticketing capabilities, the regulation requires AV companies to respond to emergency personnel within 30 seconds and imposes penalties for vehicles that enter active emergency zones.
