Netflix has used AI to recreate Gene Wilder’s voice for new Willy Wonka show, and it’s cursed

Netflix has partnered with ElevenLabs to use artificial intelligence to recreate the voice of the late actor Gene Wilder for its upcoming competition series, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket. Although the use of AI has drawn criticism for its uncanny effect, the project received official permission from Wilder’s estate and his widow, Karen B. Wilder, who expressed support for how the show celebrates his lasting legacy. Premiering on September 23, the series will feature 12 contestants competing in challenges inspired by the 1971 film, with an appearance by original Oompa Loompa actor Rusty Goffe.
