Google’s deepfake detector system used to debunk McConnell hoax pic

Google's SynthID system has successfully debunked a viral, AI-generated hoax image depicting Senator Mitch McConnell in a hospital bed. The image, which circulated widely on social media platforms like X and Reddit, was identified as fake by the fact-checking site Snopes after detection software recognized the SynthID digital watermark. Launched in 2025, SynthID embeds invisible signatures into AI-generated content that persist even after screenshots or platform transfers. While the system is highly effective, it currently only functions with participating AI models, such as those from Google and OpenAI, highlighting the ongoing industry challenge of universal deepfake detection.
