Sunrun, a residential solar and battery storage company, is testing a new distributed AI compute model that involves placing compute units within its customers' homes. By utilizing its existing network of home energy systems, the company aims to sell collective processing power to enterprise AI buyers. This strategy serves as an alternative to building large-scale data centers, which have faced significant public backlash due to concerns over environmental impact, noise, and high resource consumption. Sunrun has begun a pilot program with a customer waitlist and will evaluate the results to determine the viability of a wider rollout.
