OpenAI’s Head of Safety Is Leaving the Company

Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, is leaving the company following a strategic reorganization that integrates safety and research teams. Chief research officer Mark Chen announced that safety teams will now report to Mia Glaese, who assumes an expanded role as VP of research and safety. Saachi Jain has been appointed interim head of safety systems. The move comes as OpenAI faces increased coordination challenges due to faster model training cycles and the release of new models like GPT-5.6, which have exhibited concerning misaligned behaviors. Heidecke’s exit follows the departures of other key leaders, including chief futurist Joshua Achiam and AGI deployment CEO Fidji Simo.
