Anthropic’s Dario Amodei responds: doesn’t oppose open-weight models, but fears Chinese AI

Anthropic founder and CEO Dario Amodei clarified that his company has never advocated for a ban on open-weight models, distinguishing safe open-weight tools from the geopolitical threats posed by authoritarian governments like China. While acknowledging that open-weight models are valuable public goods for developers, Amodei warned that advanced open models could be dangerous in scenarios like biological attacks because they lack reliable guardrails and cannot be withdrawn once released. Instead of targeting open weights broadly, he advocated for restricting advanced chip access to China, cracking down on intellectual property theft through distillation, and establishing global safety testing organizations.
