Google buys crashed airline Spirit’s data at auction, because AI

Google acquired a massive trove of data from the liquidated US airline Spirit for $10 million at a bankruptcy auction, with plans to use the information to improve its AI services. The purchase includes over 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams items, millions of files from OneDrive and SharePoint, more than 30 million recorded customer service calls, and extensive operational records covering flights and crew pairings. Although the data was deidentified before the sale and Google has promised to remove any personally identifiable information, the acquisition highlights the growing value of specialized, real-world datasets for training targeted AI models.
